The Journey

Song of the Road At Sixty-Nine

Lara’s Farewell

Close to death I saw
Darkness contains light the
Half-light, near-life of the Shades
Like earth's shadow upon the sun
Not to be feared or redeemed
Only there
Both qualities share
The silence of space

One sunny day I said good-bye
Weeping uncontrollably
To our eldest daughter
Drank my last sight
Her eyes fixed on mine as
The car receded on the rutted track
We waved the chassis dipped
And swayed downhill to the road
I sought her again
They disappeared below the bluff

Such was Lara’s farewell
The end of things
The gift of her perfect honor
Had been delivered
